Heteragrion consors Hagen View in CoL in Selys 1862: 27 [25 reprint] (description of male based on at least two specimens, one in Hagen collection, the other in NHMV ["Mus. de Vienne "], comparing it with H. aurantiacum View in CoL ); Selys 1886: 60 (diagnosis); Williamson 1919: 29, Figs. 24, 80–81, 145 (discussion of species, designating MCZ specimen the lectotype ["This specimen is the type."], illustration of male head, appendages in mediodorsal and lateral view, prothorax); Santos 1968: 13–14 (distribution to Rio de Janeiro and compared with H. aurantiacum View in CoL ); Santos 1970: 149–151, Figs. 1–3 View FIGURE 1–6 (description of female, compared with H. cinnamomeum View in CoL similar in color but easily distinguished by appendages, illustration of female head, prothorax and S8–10); St. Quentin 1970: 259 (states that the specimen in NHMV very probably is from the type series and must be considered a syntype); De Marmels 1987: 233 (similarity of H. pemon De Marmels View in CoL to H. consors View in CoL ); Costa & T. C. Santos 1999: 1–7, Figs. 1–6 View FIGURE 1–6 (larval description, comparison with the larva of H. aurantiacum View in CoL , larva inhabits both lotic and lentic environments, illustration of larval habitus, gill, labium, labial palp and mandibles); Costa & T. C. Santos 2000: 4 (key); Lencioni 2005: 129, Figs. 78A–D (data on description and distribution, illustration of male appendages in lateral view, female illustrations from Santos 1970); Garrison et al 2010: 88–89 (list and comments on larval habitat).

Types. Male lectotype in MCZ and paralectotype in MHMV (not examined).

Additional material examined. 30♂ 6♀. Brazil: Espírito Santo State: Cariacica, Reserva Estadual de duas bocas, 20º15'50"S, 40º25'12"W, 03-IV-2005 GoogleMaps , 1♂, leg. G. R. Loiola; Rio de Janeiro State: Ilha da Marambaia, Gruta Sancta , 04-XII-2000 , 1♂, leg. R. W. Garrison; São Paulo State: Caraguatatuba, Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar— Núcleo Caraguatatuba , 23º35'37"S, 45º25'39"W, 119 m, 14-I/15-I/ 06-II-2000, 21-IV-2001, 10-III-2002 GoogleMaps , 28♂ 6♀ (1 tandem pair), leg. FAAL & FL .

Illustration made from following specimens. 1♂ and 1♀ —(Fig. 14A, 14B, 30D, 30E, 30F, 42D, 42E, 42F, 47C, 47D, 51A, 51B)— Brazil: São Paulo State: Caraguatatuba, Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar —Núcleo Caraguatatuba, 21-IV-2001, leg. FAAL (tandem pair—NC 2378) .

Distribution. Brazil (states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro). Sympatric with H. aurantiacum in Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, with H. brianmayi in Ubatuba.

Diagnosis. Male: much closer to H. aurantiacum but without yellow line bordering black middorsal carina, no additional dark stripes on pterothorax. Cercus in lateral view: Dorsobasal expansion present. Ventrobasal expansion longer than half length. Apex slightly curved downward (Fig. 14B). Cercus in mediodorsal view: Basal portion smaller than medial and apical portions, which are subequal. Ventral expansion with long hairs covering ventral third. Ventral branch of medial process approximately rectangular, dorsal branch Y-like, connected to ventral branch by the base, “Y” inner arm sparsely toothed (Fig. 14A). Female: posterior lobe of prothorax rectangular, yellowish with ovoid black spot in middle (Fig. 42D); Valves of ovipositor surpassing distal S10 and in lateral view its ventral margin with small spines ( Fig. 47C View FIGURE 47 ); Cercus longer than S10, with tuft of bristles at tip ( Fig. 47C View FIGURE 47 ). Basal plate: dorsal edge an inverted S-shape, almost 2x outer edge. Outer edge convex and forming with dorsal edge a round tip, ventral edge more than half length of outer edge ( Figs. 47D View FIGURE 47 ).
