Plants with horizontal shoots anisophyllous, prostrate, bearing dorsal, erect, simple, homophyllous strobiliferous branches. Creeping shoots with long and wide lateral leaves, and shorter, narrow dorsal leaves. Lateral leaves broadly triangular-ovate to lanceolate, entire. Dorsal leaves lanceolate to subulate. Vegetative leaves of erect branches distant, not concealing the stem, borne in alternating whorls 3–4. Strobili 3–10 mm in diam. incl. sporophylls. Sporophylls subpeltate, rhombic or ovate-acuminate or ovate-cuspidate to triangular-lanceolate, entire to erose-denticulate. Sporangia isovalvate, borne on the sporophyll stalk, ca. 1.5 mm wide.
Distribution:—Widely distributed in tropical America, rare in the Andes.
Habitats:—Terrestrial, sometimes epilithic, usually on wet ground, on road banks, slopes, ledges, grasslands, sea level to ca. 1300 m.
