Redescribed Male. Highland Lake, AL (DSC). Body ( Fig. 6 ) length 1.46, width 0.59; body and appendages brown. Head with large vertexal foveae, separated by one foveal diameter; in lateral view with short median clypeal tubercle, in anterior view apex of tubercle narrowly rounded, distant from apex of antennal rostrum; eye with about 51 facets; median basal indentation of vertex weakly indicat- ed; antenna 0.39 long, antennomere XI 0.14 long (37% of antennal length), antennomere IX about half length of X. Pronotum with thin antebasal sulcus indicated by dark line, sulcus slightly impressed laterally, distinct medially, median antebasal impression faintly indicated. Metacoxae subcontiguous, slightly separated. Tergites 1–4 with basolateral foveae, tergite 1 disc 0.45 wide, width between discal carinae 0.18 (distance between discal carinae 40% of discal width), ventrite 2 0.16 long, with basolateral foveae, ventrites 3–7 combined 0.18 long at middle; circular area on ventrite 6 appearing slightly impressed. Aedeagus ( Fig. 1 ) tube-like, shaft curved 180°, in lateral view with dorsal apical angle on right side acutely projecting, ventral angle acutely projecting, evenly curved between the acute apices with the ventral left point less prominent.

Female. Ventrite 6 shallowly and evenly convex, disc moderately micropunctate.

Variation. Body length 1.17–1.46, maximum width across elytra 0.56–0.59; body light brown to brown; number of eye facets varying from 50–70. Male ventrite 6 appearing flat medially for some specimens.

Distribution ( Fig. 15 ). Usually found east of the Mississippi River, with most records from localities west of the crest of the Appalachian Mountains. The few collections from west of the Mississippi River have been from Arkansas, Louisiana, and east Texas.

Comments. This is the stoutest of the North American species, but not all appear as stout as is shown by Fig. 6 . The male genitalia ( Fig. 1 ) are readily recognized by the acutely bi-angulate apex that is best seen in lateral view, with the angle of the (morphologically right) apex dorsal and more pro- tuberant, and the angle of the (morphologically left) apex ventral with the apical margin between them evenly curved. The large dorsal tentorial foveae, stouter body, large size (1.2–1.5 mm), and indistinct medial indentation of the head base are helpful in recognizing this species.
