Swartz (1798) described M. adscendens based on a Jamaican collection. We located three Swartz specimens (BM-000544052, C-10014492 and S-R-3483) belonging to this collection and selected the specimen S-R-3483 as the lectotype because it is the only fertile specimen, with flower and fruits that fit the protologue description, and bears the handwritten annotation “ Jamaica: Swartz”. Although the digital image of the BM specimen bears a similar handwritten annotation ‘ Jamaica. Dr Swartz’, comparison of this image with the corresponding specimen at BM reveals that this annotation has been added digitally and thus is not part of the original material.

Pilger (1905) described Adelobotrys multiflora based on Ule 6199 with no indication of where the studied specimen was deposited. Specimens of this collection are deposited at G, L and MG. It is probable that Pilger saw the sheet at B, but this material was destroyed in World War II. Thus, the G duplicate is proposed here as the lectotype, because it is a better fit with the original description, and has a more fully developed inflorescence bearing more flowers.

Sarmentaria decora was described by Naudin (1852) based on Martin s.n. collected in Cayenne. Wurdack & Renner (1993) indicated that the holotype was deposited at P. Martin & Cremers (2007) cited two duplicates of Martin s.n. as holotype and isotype of Sarmentaria decora , but they did not give specifics on which of the sheets is the holotype and which is the isotype. Martin & Cremers’s indication of two specimens in Paris suggest that the second step lectotypification is necessary. Following ICN Articles 9.9 and 9.17 we treat Wurdack & Renner (1993) statement as a first step lectotypification. We selected Martin s.n. (P-00107979) as the [second-step] lectotype because it is the more representative material, bearing intact fruits and also a description and an illustration of the fruit and seed prepared by Naudin.
