Diagnosis. Scybalocanthon batesi can be easily differentiated from all remaining species in the genus by the elytra having a yellow horizontal band on the central portion occupying approximately one-third of the elytral length ( Fig. 1E View FIGURE 1 ). Dark brown or black metepisternae. Anterior and posterior edge of the pronotum with a triangular black spot on middle portion.
Description. Body. Oval, lateral edges rounded. Surface opaque, head and elytra microgranulate. Color. Head, anterior and posterior edge of pronotum, anterior and posterior portions of elytra, prosternum, internal portion of hypomera, mesoventrite, mesoepisternae, lateral portions of metaventrite, metepisternae, procoxae, trochanters, basal and apical parts of femora, tibiae, and mesotarsomeres and metatarsomeres dark brown or black. Other parts of the pronotum, horizontal band at the middle portion of elytra, pygidium, most of the hypomera, central portion of metaventrite, abdomen, most of the mesocoxa and metacoxa, and femur (except the extremities) yellowish brown.
Length. 8 mm. Thorax. Anterior angles of pronotum acute (approximately 85°). Lateral margin irregularly curved outward, forming an obtuse angle at the middle portion. Elytra. Striae thin, with elliptical punctures. Eighth stria with a thin carina at the anterior portion. Basal third of the eighth stria inconspicuous (except the basal carina).
Type material. Holotype. BRAZIL: BAHIA, 1892, H.W. Bates (1♀ MNHN) . Paratypes. BRAZIL: [no data] (1♀ MNHN, 1♀ CEMT) .
Distribution. Known from Brazil (Bahia) ( Fig. 6F View FIGURE 6 ). Endemism areas: Unknown.
