Adult

( Figs. 1–7 View Figs )

Redescription. Male. Body length: 18.3–25.4 mm; robust, slightly depressed and widened toward posterior half of elytra; head, pronotum, elytra, and legs reddish chestnut brown to shiny black; sternal and abdominal areas ochreous yellow to reddish brown, depending on geographical area. Sexual dimorphism accentuated in anterior legs and in last abdominal segments.

Head. Labrum much reduced, hidden under clypeus. Clypeus enlarged, parabolic, with anterior border strongly upturned. Surface of clypeus and frons with many small punctures ( Fig. 1 View Figs ). Frontoclypeal suture incomplete on midline, with two transverse tubercles. Antennae formed by 10 segments; antennal club with 3 segments, longer than preceding 6 segments ( Fig. 2 View Figs ). Mandibles with distal part narrowed and elongate, strongly upturned with acute apex. Mentum with ventral surface concave and anterior border deeply sinuate.

Thorax. Pronotum ( Fig. 1 View Figs ) wider than long, widely convex, with scattered microscopic punctures; anterior angles nearly straight, not prominent; posterior angles obtuse, widely rounded; basal margin only defined toward the lateral angles. Prosternal process narrowed at base and widened towards apex, with many long setae. Pterosternum covered with many reddish yellow, long setae. Elytra nearly twice longer than wide, convex, with shallow small punctures along the striae, and scattered small punctures on interstriae; epipleural border narrowed throughout length. Protibia ( Fig. 3 View Figs ) with 3 tooth-like, short projections on external border and straight preapical inner spur. Meso and metatibiae longer than protibia. Three basal protarsomeres similar in form and size, short and strong; fourth tarsomere wider than third; distal tarsomere much elongate, curved and widened. Inner protarsal claw wider than external claw ( Fig. 4 View Figs ).

Abdomen. Fifth sternite clearly longer than preceding sternites, with wide membranose posterior border. Last sternite convex, with posterior border weakly sclerotized near midline. Prepygidium densely covered with reddish, short setae. Pygidium convex, wider than long, shiny, with scattered microscopic punctures, and some erect, long setae across apical border. Genital capsule strongly curved downward; parameres elongate, symmetrical, and deeply notched on preapical external border, with distal part nearly arrow-shaped and apex slightly curved ventrally ( Figs. 5–7 View Figs ).

Female. Body length: 16.5–20.7 mm. Similar to male except as follows: pronotum moderately convex; epipleural border ending near the middle of elytra with a noticeable expansion; protibia with 3 tooth-like, acute, long projections on external border; basal protarsomere elongate, protarsomeres 2 to 4 similar in form and size, longer than wide, each shorter than basal one; distal tarsomere much elongate, narrowed; inner protarsal claw slightly longer than external claw, with apex acute and entire; last sternite without membranous area on the midline of distal border.

Remarks. Externally, adults of A. scarabaeoides appear similar to A. atacazo Kirsch , because the dorsal coloration in both species is completely dark brown, without yellow spots. However, the anterior border of the clypeus is contracted to the apex in A. scarabaeoides ( Fig. 1 View Figs ), and is broadly rounded in A. atacazo . The pygidium is glabrous in the former species and setose in the latter. The external border of each paramere is strongly emarginated in A. scarabaeoides ( Figs. 5–7 View Figs ), whereas it is weakly emarginated in A. atacazo .

Distribution. Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia (Ratcliffe 2003). In Colombia. A. scarabaeoides has a wide distribution in the departments of Antioquia, Atlántico, Boyaca, Caldas, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Huila, Meta, Nariño, Quindio, Risaralda, Santander, Tolima and Valle (Restrepo et al. 2003), but it is more common in the zone with premontane very humid forest (bmh-P) according with the classification system of Holdridge (1987).
