Type Locality: France, Main-et-Loire, Blou.
Vernacular Names: Millet's Shrew.
Synonyms: Sorex (Sorex) euronotus Miller 1901 ; Sorex (Sorex) fretalis Miller 1909 ; Sorex (Sorex) gemellus Ott 1968 ; Sorex (Sorex) personatus Millet 1828 ; Sorex (Sorex) santonus Mottaz 1906 .
Distribution: W Europe from the Netherlands and NW Germany to France and Switzerland, south to N Spain; also in Jersey (Channel Isls), Liechtenstein and westernmost tip of Austria.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Sorex , S. araneus group. A sibling species of araneus ( Meylan and Hausser, 1978) , characterized mainly by the karyotype (2n = 22/24, FN = 44). Its distribution broadly overlaps with that of araneus in Germany. Revised by Hausser (1990), range map in Mitchell-Jones et al. (1999).
