Trachinotus goodei View in CoL Jordan & Evermann 1896

Extant specimens: Two specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000005 ( Fig. 29a View FIGURE 29 ), and MCUC ZOO.0000048 ( Fig. 29b View FIGURE 29 ) .

Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Gasterosteus occidentalis ” ( MCUC ZOO.0000005) and “P. Th. Gasterosteus carolinus ” ( MCUC ZOO.0000048).

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None.

Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. Both specimens seem to have been reidentified subsequently to their arrival in Portugal, as the specific names are written on a rectangular paper glued to the herbarium sheets, following the genus. Gasterosteus occidentalis Linnaeus 1758 is considered a nomen oblitum, and Oligoplites saurus (Bloch & Schneider 1801) is the accepted valid name. Although both species, Oligoplites saurus and Gasterosteus carolinus Linnaeus 1766 (= Trachinotus carolinus ) are known to occur along the coast of Rio de Janeiro, however they are distinct from T. goodei . Neither of these names are mentioned in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript, and no species description in this document fits the characteristics of T. goodei . On the back of the herbarium sheet of both specimens, there is a subsequent identification with the name “ Trachynotus [sic] glaucus ”. This pencil inscription was probably done by someone other than Veloso. There are 13 herborized specimens of Gasterosteus listed in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), but no specimen of Gasterosteus is mentioned in the transference lists to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences or the University of Coimbra. Trachinotus goodei occurs in the Western Atlantic on Bermuda and from Massachusetts ( USA) to Argentina ( Smith-Vaniz 2002)
