Classification on the specimen: “P. Abd. Cyprinus ”.

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None.

Comments: There are 25 herborized specimens of Cyprinus mentioned in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794) but no specimen is mentioned in the transference documents to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences or the University of Coimbra. In the Ichthyologia Fluminensis, there are two species of Cyprinus described, but both are freshwater fishes of the order Characiformes (see comments under Hoplias malabaricus ). Polydactylus virginicus occurs in the Western Atlantic from New Jersey ( USA) to Argentina (Menezes & Figueiredo 1985; Feltes 2002).
