Pagrus pagrus ( Linnaeus 1758) View in CoL
Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000021 ( Fig. 64a View FIGURE 64 ) and MCUC ZOO.0000042 ( Fig. 64b View FIGURE 64 ).
Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Sparus pagrus ” ( MCUC ZOO.0000042).
Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None (see Comments).
Comments: Sixty-seven herborized specimens of Scarus are listed in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), and two specimens of Scarus pagrus are mentioned in the transference document to the University of Coimbra, possibly the two extant specimens examined here. A description of this species is present in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis. In one of the specimens (MCUC ZOO.0000042), the Portuguese name was written beyond the margin on the bottom left corner, and it was painted over with blue ink. However, it is possible to see that the name below the ink is “Pargo”, a name still used to refer to this species. Pagrus pagrus occurs in the Western Atlantic from New York ( USA) to Argentina ( Carpenter 2002d) and in the Eastern Atlantic from Scotland to Morrocos and Mediterranean Sea ( Carpenter & Angelis 2016).
