Discussion: Sivertsen (1954) and Scheffer (1958) considered Phocarctos congeneric with Neophoca , however, it was retained as separate by Clark (1873 a), King (1960, 1983), Rice (1977), Barnes (1989), and Wynen et al. (2001).
