Type Locality: Indonesia, W Sumatra, Bengkeulen.

Vernacular Names: Siamang.

Synonyms: Symphalangus continentis Thomas 1908 ; Symphalangus gibbon (C. Miller 1779) ; Symphalangus subfossilis Hooijer 1960 ; Symphalangus volzi (Pohl 1911) .

Distribution: Barisan Mountains of Sumatra ( Indonesia); mountains of Malay Peninsula south of Perak River.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Lower Risk (nt) as S. s. syndactylus and S. s. continentis .
