In opinion 2166, the ICZN (2007) ruled that Oceania armata is a valid name, that it is the type species of the genus Oceania Péron & Lesueur, 1810 , and that the correct spelling of the family name is Oceaniidae . Tiarella Trinci, 1906 is a synonym of Oceania and preoccupied by Tiarella Swainson [Mollusca].
The genus comprises likely only one species ( Schuchert 2016).
