Diagnosis. Hypatopa orthocera is diagnostic by the internal sclerite of the phallus curved in a right angle near base and circularly enlarged distally. This species is similar to H. apicirecta in the male genitalia, and the differences between them are stated under H. apicirecta .
Description. Forewing length 7.0– 8.5 mm ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 2−9 ). Head pale gray on frons, scales tipped with pale yellow, pale yellow on vertex. Antenna with scape brown on dorsal surface except some scales tipped with grayish white, grayish white on ventral surface; pecten brown; flagellum with dorsal surface brown and becoming paler from base to apex, ventral surface grayish white and ciliated in male. Labial palpus with outer surface dark brown except some scales tipped with grayish white, inner surface grayish white; third segment about 2/3 length of second, grayish white apically. Haustellum brown. Thorax and tegula brown, some scales tipped with grayish white. Forewing brown, with scattered grayish white tipped scales; discal and plical spots dark brown, diffused, forming an ill-defined antemedian fascia, its inner margin edged with grayish white tipped pale gray scales; discocellular spots dark brown, rounded; fringe grayish brown, intermixed with grayish white tipped brown and grayish brown scales. Hind- wing and fringe grayish brown, gradually darker from base to apex. Legs with dorsal surface grayish white; ventral surface dark brown, some scales tipped with grayish white; all tibiae and tarsomeres grayish white at apex.
Male genitalia ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 15−17 ). Uncus subtriangular, wide at base, narrowed to a rounded apex, slightly curved ventrad, sparsely setose. Gnathos with posterior margin slightly arched and notched medially, obtriangular anteriorly. Dorsal part of valva with costal process almost uniformly wide, obtusely rounded at apex, slightly arched outward medially, from costa uniformly extending ventrad to proximal flange; proximal flange nearly rounded, with sparse spines along ventral margin, its inner surface with dense microtrichiae on dorsal half and with setae on ventral half. Ventral part of valva with basal 5/7 broad, subovoidal; distal process clubbed, bent inward, sparsely setose on outer surface, flat and smooth on inner surface; sacculus wide at base, gradually narrowed to terminal, with sparse long setae along distal 3/4 of ventral margin. Juxta a transverse band, deeply concave in broadly U-shape medially on posterior margin. Vinculum a narrow band. Phallus slightly shorter than valva, straight, basal 2/5 spherically dilated, distal 3/5 almost uniform, rounded apically; internal sclerite curved near base, forming a right angle, circularly enlarged distally ( Fig. 15a View FIGURES 15−17 ); anellus with cone-like setae on distal 3/4.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 21−24 ). Apophyses posteriores approximately 3 times length of apophyses anteriores. Eighth tergum with a darkly pigmented longitudinal median streak. Intersegmental membrane posterior to seventh segment bearing microtrichiae around ostium. Seventh tergum and sternum straight on posterior margin. Antrum funnel-shaped. Ductus bursae slightly longer than corpus bursae; internal wall with overlapping platelets on anterior 5/7; ductus seminalis arising from ductus bursae proximal to antrum. Corpus bursae ovate, with dense granules; signum at posterior 1/3 of corpus bursae, rounded basally, with a large subtriangular process from its anterior margin.
Distribution. China (Chongqing).
Etymology. The specific epithet of this species is derived from the Latin orthocerus, in reference to the internal sclerite of the phallus curved and forming a right angle near base.
