Genus Euplatypus Wood, 1993 View in CoL

* Euplatypus alternans ( Chapuis, 1865) View in CoL

Notes. Presumably widespread, with records from Mexico and northern Amazonia. The Peru record is a male from Junín, Cordillera Oriental , Calabaza village , 3,000 m, 20. IX.2015, A. Petrov ( AVPC) .

Euplatypus bilobatus ( Strohmeyer, 1911) View in CoL

Notes. It has not been possible to locate the unique holotype. The original description is not detailed enough to allow identification of the species, so it could be represented among the unidentified morphospecies.

** Euplatypus cribricollis (Blandford, 1896) Notes. Known from two male syntypes from Panama. This is the first record for South America. Four males were collected from FITs at Los Amigos Biological Station ( Table 2). In addition, I have eight other males reared by Berkov and Centeno from Los Amigos, reared from cut branches of E. coriacea Nov. 2003 – Jan. 2004 ( LRKC) .

* Euplatypus decorus (Schedl, 1936)

Notes. First record since the species was described from a male from French Guiana. In addition to the six males from Loreto ( Table 2), there is one male from Madre de Dios, [Manú,] Pantiacolla Lodge, −12.655°, −71.2317°, 420 m, FIT, 14–19 Nov. 2007, David Brzoska ( SEMC) .

* Euplatypus dimidiatus ( Chapuis, 1865) View in CoL

Notes. Known from northern South America. All 12 specimens were taken from FITs ( Table 2) .

Euplatypus longulus ( Chapuis, 1865) View in CoL

Notes. Distributed from Mexico to Brazil, common.

Euplatypus parallelus (Fabricius, 1801)

Notes. The most abundant and widespread Neotropical platypodine, and the only Neotropical species which has spread around the world (Beaver 2013). Euplatypus parallelus is known from every country in the Neotropics. This highly polyphagous species is one of the few Neotropical Platypodinae considered to be destructive (Beaver 2013). It attacks stressed trees, can vector pathogenic fungi, and the tunnels and fungal staining reduce the economic value of timber.

The species is especially abundant at lights and in UV light traps, and it makes up large portions of Platypodinae collections in museums. Peru collections I have seen are: Madre de Dios, Tambopata, Río Tambopata Reserve, UV light, 16–17 Jan. 1987, J. V. McHugh and Q. D. Wheeler (205, mixed sexes), and same data except 19 Jan. 1987, Q. D. Wheeler (7 males, 8 females) ( CUIC). Two Los Amigos Biological Station specimens were sheltering in Heliconia leaf rolls .

Euplatypus segnis ( Chapuis, 1865) View in CoL

Notes. A common species distributed from Mexico to Paraguay. Junior synonyms are Euplatypus hians (Chapuis) View in CoL , Euplatypus pulicaris (Chapuis) View in CoL , and Euplatypus nitidipennis (Schedl) ( Kirkendall 2017) . Specimens from the Neotropics that have been identified as Euplatypus compositus (Say) View in CoL are usually E. segnis View in CoL ; this includes the Neotropical records of E. compositus View in CoL in Atkinson (2016). In addition to the 48 E. segnis View in CoL recorded in

Table 2, I have the following new records: 2 males reared by Berkov and Centeno from Los Amigos , reared from cut branches of E. coriacea , Nov. 2003 – Jan. 2004 ( LRKC) ; 1 male labeled Madre de Dios, [Manú,] Cocha Cashu Biol. Sta. , −11.8958°, −71.4067°, 350 m, lowland rainforest flight trap, 17–19 Oct. 2000, Robert Brooks ( SEMC) ; 2 males, Junín, San Ramón, near Chanchamayo River, Gad Gha Kum Lodge , 900 m, −11.1068°, −75.3351°, 10–18 Jan. 2012, P. Skelley, flight intercept trap ( FSCA) ; 15 males from a FIT run by R. Leschen at Madre de Dios, Tampopata, 15 km NE Puerto Maldonado, Reserva Cuzco Amazónico , −12.55°, −69.55°, 200 m, 13 June– 18 July 1989 ( SEMC) ; 4 males from Loreto, [Maynas] Iquitos , 90 m, 7–9 May 1992, FIT, J. Danoff-Burg ( SEMC) , identified as E. pulicaris ; 2 males from Madre de Dios, [Manú] Pantiacolla Lodge , −12.655°, −71.2317°, 420 m, FIT, 14–19 Nov. 2007, David Brzoska ( SEMC) ; 1 male, Loreto, Yacumama Lodge, nr. jct. Río Maranon and Río Ucayali, −4.8°, −73.5, 6–20.VIII.1994, 8W light trap in woods, P. Skelley ( FSCA) ; 1 male, Junín, San Ramón, Gad Gha Kum Lodge (El Mensajero), −11.1068°, −75.3351°, 10–18 Jan. 2012, 800 m, P. E. Skelley, Malaise trap ( FSCA) ; 1 male, Junín, San Ramon, near Chanchamayo River, Gad Gha Kum Lodge , 900 m, −11.1068°, −75.3351°, 10–18 Jan. 2012, P. Skelley, flight intercept trap ( FSCA) .

(*) Euplatypus LRK 010

Notes. I have specimens of this unique, undescribed species from 1,500–1,800 m in Costa Rica ( LRKC, INBio), in addition to the single male from Peru: Cuzco, [Paucartambo,] Cock of the Rock Lodge , −13.055°, −71.545°, 1,120 m, FIT, 4–9 Nov. 2007, David Brzoska ( SEMC) .
