18. Cnidoscolus byssinus Fern.Casas, Fontqueria View in CoL 55: 81 (2003). Type:— BRAZIL. Bahia: São Inácio GoogleMaps , area muito pedregosa e muito seca, 11°7 ′ 48 ″ S, 42°48 ′ 0 ″ W, 500 m, 6 October 1990, A. Freire Fierro 1801 (holotype SPF-104901 !; isotype MAF).
Distribution:— Brazil (microendemic).
Notes:— Fernández Casas (2006e) compared this species with C. obtusifolius (as C. pubescens ). It was distinguished by having an androecium with six whorls instead of the four verticiles characteristic of C. obtusifolius . He also mentions the similarities between C. byssinus and C. rupestris , suggesting that the latter could be a hybrid of C. obtusifolius and C. byssinus . More study of the relationships among these three species would be beneficial.
