Sibbaldianthe subg. Schistophyllidium (Juz. ex Fed.) Mosyakin & Shiyan , comb. nov.
Basionym: Potentilla subg. Schistophyllidium Juz. ex Fedorov (1958: 87) [ Potentilla subg. Schistophyllidium Juzepczuk 1941: 81 , nom.
inval., descr. ross.]. ≡ Schistophyllidium (Juz. ex Fed.) Ikonnikov (1979: 210) . Type: Potentilla bifurca View in CoL L. (listed as the type by Fedorov 1958: 87) [≡ Schistophyllidium bifurcum View in CoL (L.) Ikonn. ≡ Sibbaldianthe bifurca View in CoL
(L.) Kurtto & T. Eriksson; the currently accepted name in bold].
3. Sibbaldianthe bifurca (L.) Kurtto & T. Eriksson (2003: 139) ≡ Potentilla bifurca Linnaeus (1753: 497) . ≡ Schistophyllidium bifurcum (L.) Ikonnikov (1979: 210).
Type (lectotype, designated by Soják 1988):—[probably RUSSIA?] LINN 655.10 About LINN (left plant;http://linnean-online.org/4849). According to the protologue: “Habitat in Sibiria” .
The Linnaean specimen LINN 655.10 contains two plant fragments, the left-hand one with patent hairs (probably from Siberia; provided to Linnaeus by either J. Amman or J.G. Gmelin), and another with appressed hairs (origin unknown). The lectotype of Potentilla bifurca selected by Soják (1988) is the plant with patent hairs (see also Soják 2005). This species in the strict sense (excluding taxa usually accepted earlier as P. moorcroftii , P. orientalis , and P. semiglabra and transferred here to Sibbaldianthe ) occurs mainly in Siberia, northern Kazakhstan, western China (Xizang and Xinjiang), Mongolia, and the easternmost parts of Europe (occasionally also as an alien species in other regions of Europe) (see also comments on distribution of related taxa below).
