BRADYSIA FENESTRALIS (ZETTERSTEDT, 1838) View in CoL
Synonym: frigida ( Winnertz, 1867) .
Literature: Freeman (1983a): 168; Freeman (1983b): 36; Menzel (1998): 20 [as Bradysia arcana , misidentification]; Menzel & Mohrig (1998): 354; Menzel & Mohrig (2000): 153; Menzel & Heller (2005): 350.
Material examined: Temple, Berkshire, 1 male, 23.iv.1932, leg. Basden ( BMNH). The Loke, Norwich, Norfolk, 1 male, 2.v.−6.v.1992, Laurence leg. ( DEI) .
Ecological notes: found in garden. Reared from narcissus bulbs and nests of moorhen ( Freeman, 1983a). iv–v.
Taxonomic note: Contrary to the literature study by Menzel & Mohrig (2000: 151 and 154), Freeman (1983a, b) correctly identified in part the extremely rare species B. fenestralis (Zetterstedt) [nec B. arcana Menzel & Mohrig, 1998 ]. A male from BMNH [details: Temple, Berkshire, 23.iv.1932, Basden leg.] was used for Fig. 135 in Freeman (1983b). At least with this specimen there is no doubt that it is B. fenestralis and not B. arcana . There is another male from BMNH, cited in Freeman (1983b: 36) [labelled ‘ Kent, Cobham’], but the identification is unconfirmed as the genitalia preparation is black.
