Redescription of male (Lectotype).
Coloration. Large part of mandibles, labrum, lower part of scapus, clypeus, supraclypeal area and lower part of paraocular area, inner and dorsal part of foretibia, base of mesotibia, distal half of metatibia, mid- and hind-metatarsi except apex, pronotal lobe and spot on tegula yellow. Lower part of flagellum dark reddish. Other body parts all black.
Head. Width: 1.65 mm; length: 1.65 mm. Clypeus, supraclypeal area and lower half of paraocular area sparsely punctated, punctures distinct in all parts, one to four diameters apart, interspaces microsculptured, slightly shiny. Frons above antennae with large free unpunctated space, distinctly larger than antennal socket; rest of frons and vertex distinctly and densely punctated, punctures well-developed, interspaces small, less than half diameter apart in most parts, above supraantennal free space punctated slightly sparser (cf. fig. 9). Malar area longer than in H. confusus , microridged (cf. fig. 3 and 4). Gena punctated and weakly microridged, punctures ill-defined, distinct. Preoccipital ridge developed, with weak nearly indistinct ledge. Antennae long; antennomere III wider than long, IV quadratic, V distinctly longer than wide.
Mesosoma. Scutum densely and uniformly punctated, punctures well-developed, about half diameter apart, interspaces microsculptured, slightly shiny to dull. Mesopleuron less densely punctated than scutum and punctures larger than on scutum; in central part, punctures well-defined, one to less than one diameter apart, interspaces indistinctly microsculptured, shiny; on hypoepimeral area, punctures well-defined, about half to two diameters apart, interspaces shiny (cf. fig. 16). Central part of propodeum rugose, with ill-defined lamella separating anterior (roughly sculptured) and posterior (smoothly sculptured) parts. Legs not modified, densely micropunctated, punctures ill-defined.
Metasoma (in lectotype missing, described based on additional material). Terga distinctly hairy, first tergum with distinct apicolateral bands. Tergum I sparsely, but distinctly punctated, punctures well-defined, about half to four diameters apart, interspaces distinctly microsculptured, shiny (cf. fig. 23). Other terga more distinctly, densely and roughly sculptured. Sternum III in most specimens with indistinct transverse elevation in central part. Sterna II to V uniformly sparsely punctated, punctures large, in some specimens ill-defined and in some specimens welldefined, half to two diameters apart, interspaces shiny.
Variability of males. Body length: 5.0–8.0 mm. In some specimens is pronotum dorsally with yellow spots, in most specimens black. Head width: 1.50–2.10 mm; head length: 1.50–1.95 mm; width/length: 0.97–1.02 (-1.06). Lower part of paraocular area with interspaces among punctures indistinctly microsculptured, shiny to bright shiny in most specimens. Malar area variable, in most specimens slightly longer than in any specimen of H. confusus .
Preoccipital ridge developed, with distinct, but weak ledge in most specimens, in some specimens nearly indistinct. Sternum VII with apical lobes L-shaped, apex with convex outer margin (fig. 31). Sternum VIII with distinct medial process, process narrow, less than twice as long as wide (fig. 32).
Description of female. Body length: 6.0–7.5 mm.
Coloration. Base of all tibiae, pronotal lobe, pronotum dorsally, and paraocular area between eye and clypeal margin yellow (fig. 3). Face markings could be slightly reduced in some specimens. Apical part of clypeus red in some specimens. Lower part of flagellum dark reddish. Other body parts all black.
Head. Width: 1.80–2.00 mm; length: 1.80–1.95 mm; width/length: 0.96–1.04. Clypeus, supraclypeal area and lower half of paraocular area sparsely punctated, punctures shallow, ill-defined, less than one to four diameters apart, interspaces strongly microsculptured, dull. Frons above antennae with free unpunctated space, about as long as antennal socket, or longer in some specimens; frons just above supraantennal free area sparsely punctated, some interspaces up to two diameters apart; rest of frons and vertex densely punctated, punctures well-developed, about half to less than half diameter apart, interspaces not ridged, slightly shiny (fig. 10). Malar area variable, microridged; in some specimens distinctly longer than malar area in H. confusus (fig. 3). Gena punctated and microridged, punctures distinct. Preoccipital ridge developed, with weak ledge, distinct or indistinct in some specimens. Antennae short, antennomeres III and V about as long as wide, IV transverse.
Mesosoma. Scutum densely and uniformly punctated, punctures well-developed, one to half diameter apart (individually very variable), interspaces microsculptured, slightly shiny to dull. Mesopleuron densely punctated, sculpture similar to that on scutum, punctation less uniform and more variable in size than on scutum; in central part, most punctures about one to less than half diameter apart, interspaces microsculptured, slightly shiny to shiny; on hypoepimeral area, punctures ill-defined and much smaller than on central part, half to two diameters apart, interspaces microsculptured, slightly shiny (fig. 17). Central part of propodeum rugose; dorsal part roughly sculptured and posterior part smoothly sculptured. Legs not modified, densely micropunctated, punctures ill-defined.
Metasoma. Terga distinctly hairy, first tergum with distinct apicolateral bands. Tergum I finely and sparsely punctated, punctures ill-defined, nearly indistinct, about one to five diameters apart, interspaces distinctly microsculptured, slightly shiny (fig. 24). Other terga more distinctly and densely sculptured. Sterna II to V uniformly punctated, punctures large, ill-defined, one to three diameters apart, interspaces shiny.
Distribution and ecology. Hylaeus incongruus is a thermotolerant species that is usually found on sandy biotopes, both in xeric areas and in wetlands. This species is widely distributed and is probably found throughout Europe and as far east as Siberia.
Comments. We examined three specimens from the type series labelled as “cotype”. The lectotype was designated using a male specimen (with a missing abdomen). Two other specimens (females) were on one pin. One of these females is H. incongruus , and the other is H. gibbus .
