Type Locality: Chile, Coquimbo Prov., Coquimbo.
Vernacular Names: Long-tailed Chinchilla.
Synonyms: Chinchilla chincilla (Fischer 1814) ; Chinchilla velligera Prell 1934 .
Distribution: N Chile, in foothills of the Andes and coastal mountains south to Talca.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: See Jimenez (1996) for current status of wild populations. Karyotype has 2n=64 and FN=126 ( George and Weir, 1974).
