Distribution and habitat.

Tonle Sap River and Lake, and most tributaries (locality no. 3, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 32, 38, 39 and 40). Buried just below surface of soft, muddy substrate of the water bodies.

Remarks.

Approximately 17 different species of Corbicula have previously been recorded from Cambodia (Suppl. material 1: Table S1), but there has been no known attempt to verify if all are valid records. In neighbouring Thailand, 21 nominal Corbicula species were all found to belong to only Corbicula fluminea (OF Müller, 1774), a single species ( Kijviriya et al. 1991). Based on morphological examination of the fresh material from the Tonle Sap basin, it is possible that there may be more than one Corbicula species present. However, further investigation including molecular analysis will be required to confirm the species identities ( Bieler and Mikkelsen 2019).

Corbicula species are the only bivalves that are commercially harvested from the Lake to be sold locally and exported abroad for human consumption and as animal feed (Fig. 4A, C View Figure 4 ). More than 6000 tonnes of Corbicula clams were recorded from five commercial landing sites in Kampong Chhnang Province, within the Tonle Sap basin, over the period of one year ( Ngor et al. 2018d).
