Key to the species of the Trimma tevegae complex (adults).

1a Anterior predorsal scale in the midline cycloid, second dorsal spine usually reaches the middle of the second dorsal fin, only 2 cephalic sensory papillae in row f on the chin and in row r on the top of the snout, usually 4 papillae in row d ʹ immediately behind the maxilla, no third (ventralmost) row of cheek scales, live colour with no blue stripe from anterior tip of snout to origin of first dorsal fin, lateral stripe continuing anteriorly over eye narrowed over pupil to form two spots connected by a thin line, preserved specimens lacking darker stripe in centre of snout, four distinct groupings of small round black melanophores situated at the 3, 4:30, 6 and 9 o’clock positions around the eye........... 1b Anterior rows of midline predorsal scales cycloid or ctenoid, usually 4 or more cephalic sensory papillae in row f on the chin and in row r on the top of the snout and 6 or more papillae in row d ʹ immediately behind the maxilla, third (ventralmost) row of cheek scales usually present, lateral stripe (if present) continuing anteriorly over eye, not narrowed over pupil to form two spots connected by a thin line, pigmentation around eye not in four distinct groups of small, round, black melanophores.... 2

2a Second spine of first dorsal fin not reaching beyond base of third ray of second dorsal fin, no blue (live) or dark (preserved) stripe present on anterior midline of head, top and sides of snout densely pigmented with small, dark, rounded chromatophores mixed with slightly larger, amorphous, lighter brown chromatophores and a sprinkling of much larger, darker, rounded chromatophores, a dark spot behind symphysis of lower jaw.......................... 2b Second spine of first dorsal fin usually reaching well beyond base of third ray of second dorsal fin (except in T. hollemani ), a blue (live) or dark (preserved) stripe present on anterior midline of head, top and sides of snout not as above, a dark spot

behind symphysis of lower jaw usually absent............................................................... 3 3a Live and freshly collected specimens with a blue spot in front of eye, another on opercle behind ventral margin of pupil and a blue stripe bordered dorsally with red below eye from tip of maxilla to at least bend of preopercle, these areas dark in preserved specimens, second dorsal spine elongate, usually reaching beyond end of second dorsal fin....................................................................... 3b No blue spot on opercle or blue stripe below eye (may be a white stripe) in live/fresh specimens, these areas not dark in preserved material, second spine of first dorsal fin usually not reaching to end of second dorsal fin...................... 4

4a Second spine of second dorsal fin not reaching beyond base of third ray of second dorsal fin, usually 5 papillae in row r, dark stripe in midline of snout in preserved material often made up of amorphous large brown chromatophores, no broad diffuse internal dark stripe over the abdominal cavity which narrows and continues posteriorly on and just below the vertebral column............................................... T. hollemani n. sp. (Solomons to Sulawesi and north to Philippines)

4b Second spine of second dorsal fin usually reaching to base of last ray of second dorsal fin or beyond, usually 4 papillae in row r, dark stripe in midline of snout in preserved material often made up of tiny round black melanophores, a broad diffuse internal dark stripe over the abdominal cavity which narrows and continues posteriorly on and just below the vertebral column..............................................................................
