Type species: Paleorhinus bransoni Williston, 1904 . Diagnosis: Characterized by the following autapomorphies: discrete anteroposteriorly extending row of 6–7 slightly raised nodes on the lateral surface of the jugal; low paired ridges on lateral surface of squamosal enclosing a shallow, slit-like fossa.
Comments: Paleorhinus is a historically problematic wastebasket taxon that is in need of a full revision that is beyond the scope of the present paper. Here, we merely report characters that appear to be uniquely shared between the genotype species, Paleorhinus bransoni , and ‘ Francosuchus ’ angustifrons and thus support referral of the latter to the genus Paleorhinus (see Phylogenetic Analysis, below). An assessment of whether Paleorhinus is a subjective junior synonym of Parasuchus is beyond the scope of this work (see above).
