Ericaria crinita f. bosphorica (Sauvageau) S.S. Sadogurska, J. Neiva et A. Israel. comb. nov.

Basionym: Cystoseira bosphorica Sauvageau (1912: 413 , 529). Published in: Sauvageau, C. (1912). A propos des Cystoseira de Banyuls et Guéthary. View in CoL Bulletin de la Station biologique d’Arcachon 14: 133–556.

Lectotype (designated by Gomez Garreta & Ribera 2005): TURKEY, Buyuk-Dere Gulf ( Bosphorus Strait ), October 1840, collected by Gustave Thuret. Specimen PC 0596565 ( Herbarium Thuret , Herbarium of the Laboratoire de Cryptogamie of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle of Paris —PC).

Diagnosis: Thallus is caespitose, with many (8–12, up to 21) thick (2–6 mm), long, and smooth axes. Holdfast in the form of a disc, tophules are absent. Thalli are on average 30–50 cm in height (up to 100 cm). Spinose appendages are absent on all branches. Apex is smooth and very prominent. Cryptostomata are numerous and prominent. Receptacles are terminal, compact, non-mucronate, cylindrical, 3–8 mm (up to 15) long with prominent conceptacles and occasionally present lateral spinose appendages (1–2, up to 4–5). Conceptacles are hermaphrodite. Aerocysts are quite common, abundant on individuals growing in sheltered locations, less frequent and smaller in size on individuals from open shores; 4–8 mm × 2–5 mm. Young parts of thalli are slightly iridescent.

Comments: taxon endemic of the Black Sea; its communities decline and even disappeared in some areas, thus it requires strict protection.

Cystoseira barbata var. flaccida (Kützing) Woronichin (1908: 117) = Cystoseira barbata f. hoppei × flaccida Woronichin (1908: 118) = Ericaria crinita f. bosphorica (Sauvageau) S.S. Sadogurska, J. Neiva et A. Israel. comb. nov.

Note: Woronichin (1908) was, probably, the first author, who described “ Cystoseira View in CoL with spinose receptacles” from the Black Sea. He erroneously referred to it as the forma of the C. barbata . His original description of the C. barbata var. flaccida and C. barbata f. hoppei × flaccida correspond to the later description of the C. bosphorica Sauvageau (1912: 413 , 529), which was suggested 4 years later. This synonymy has also been noted by Zinova & Kalugina (1974).
