There are three freshwater atherinids found within the Kimberley, including two species that are endemic to the region ( Allen et al. 2002). The endemic species include Craterocephalus helenae and C. lentiginosus , while the remaining species, C. stramineus , is endemic to northern Australia from the Ord River east to the Gulf of Carpentaria ( Allen et al. 2002).
