Five species of freshwater plotosid are known from the Kimberley, with most being widely distributed across northern Australia, the exception being Neosilurus pseudospinosus , which is restricted to the Timor Sea Drainage Division ( Allen et al. 2002). The most widespread of the species is Neosilurus hyrtlii , which is one of the most widespread freshwater fish species on the continent.
