Hyrtl’s Tandan
Neosilurus hyrtlii is Australia’s most widespread freshwater plotosid ( Allen et al. 2002). Within Western Australia the species is found throughout the Pilbara (Indian Ocean Drainage Division; Ashburton River north to DeGrey River ) (Morgan & Gill 2004) and in all major Kimberley rivers ( Fig. 10), including the Fitzroy, May (Lennard), Isdell, Charnley, Caulder, Prince Regent, Roe, Mitchell, King Edward, Carson, Drysdale, King George, Berkely, Durack, Pentecost and Ord ( Fig. 10). The species is common in a variety of habitats throughout the region and often forms large schools. However, there is potential for misidentification between this species and Porochilus rendahli .
