The Kimberley is a hotspot for terapontids, with almost a third of the Australian representatives found here ( Vari 1978). Six of the 10 species occurring within the Kimberley are endemic to the region, including Hannia greenwayi , Hephaestus epirrhinos , Leiopotherapon macrolepis , Syncomistes kimberleyensis Vari , Syncomistes rastellus and Syncomistes trigonicus . A further two species are endemic to the Kimberley and western Northern Territory, viz. Hephaestus jenkinsi and Syncomistes butleri , while the remaining species, viz. Amniataba percoides and Leiopotherapon unicolor , are widespread throughout Australia.
