6.3. barbarus penibeticus Mateu & Colas, 1954: 53 View in CoL View at ENA Spain
Note 2: Formerly, the taxa formenterrae and penibeticus were treated as subspecies of O. abacoides by Zaballos and Jeanne (1994) and Ortuño (1996). The contrary is the view of Serrano (2003, 2013) and Bousquet (2003) who have treated them as subspecies of O. barbarus . Recently, Pupier and Coulon (2013) made a detailed study of the female genitalia of two groups of Orthomus , including the genitalia of the aforementioned three taxa. The French authors showed that the spermathecal complex of both formenterrae and penibeticus is of the type “ barbarus ”, while that of O. abacoides is of the type “ abacoides ”, as clear morphological differences exist between the two morphological types.
