Onychodactylus japonicus species complex

Our data suggest that that the Japanese clade of Onychodactylus constitutes a species complex, within which we recognize at least one confirmed candidate species, based on our and previously published data, which we describe below as O. nipponoborealis . Further data from Japanese populations are required to clarify this complex, so, until morphological data are available to clarify the status of the two populations showing very divergent mtDNA lineages from the rest, we treat them here as unconfirmed candidate species, and labelled tentatively as O. cf. japonicus .
