Type material. [ Corylophodes punctipennis Matthews (1899) ] Lectotype: female, Ichiuchi , Japan ( BMNH). Paralectotype: 1 specimen ( BMNH) (not examined) .
Specimens examined. [ Shikoku ] Tokushima Prefecture: 11 specimens, Mt . Takamaru, Kamikatsu town , 26 May 2010, K . Furukawa leg . Ehime Prefecture: 17 specimens, Mt . Takanawa, Matsuyama city, 30 May 2010, K . Furukawa leg .; 6 specimens, Mt. Ishizuchi, Kumakôgen-town , 2 June 2010, K . Furukawa leg .
Diagnosis. This species is very similar to the other species of Holopsis in Japan in the external morphology, but the wavy lines on the metaventrite are slightly more distinct than those of the other species. The elongate sperm duct lobe and the very long and slender gland duct lobe of the spermatheca are the most reliable characters with which to identify this species. Its slender penis with a long and forked sclerite and its tegmen with a pointed apex are similar to those of H. kirejtshuki Bowestead, 2003 , but are nonetheless reliable characters to distinguish the present species from H. kurilensis Bowestead, 2003 , H. lewisei Bowestead, 2003 , and H. ryukyuensis sp. n.
Description. Length 1.18–1.48 mm; width 0.87– 1.13 mm. Dorsal surface almost entirely dark brown to black; anterior margin of pronotum yellow, turning transparent towards edges; ventral surface dark brown to black with pale to black hypomeron; mouth parts and legs pale brown; antennae pale brown with 3 apical segments slightly darker ( Fig. 1A–B View Fig ).
Body nearly circular, strongly convex, 1.3–1.4 times as long as wide; pronotum 0.4 times as long as wide; elytra 1.0 times as long as wide, 2.8–3.2 times as long as pronotum, 1.2 times as wide as pronotum ( Figs 1A–B View Fig , 2A View Fig ). Antennomere 3 very elongate; antennomeres 4, 6, 7, and 8 transverse; antennomere 5 slightly elongate; antennomere 11 apically pointed ( Fig. 3A View Fig ). Labrum rectangular and slightly emarginate medially, with rounded apical angles ( Fig. 2E View Fig ). Labium rectangular with pentagonal ridge ( Fig. 2E View Fig ). Pronotum with entirely rounded anterior margin; punctures dense and fine in very shallow depressions, with fine and short pubescence; interspaces smooth and shining ( Fig. 2A–B View Fig ). Scutellum transverse with slightly rounded sides ( Fig. 2B View Fig ). Elytra widest about 1/3 from base; punctures dense in shallow depressions, with fine and short pubescence; interspaces smooth and shining; sutural striae absent ( Fig. 2A–B View Fig ). Metaventrite about 0.5 times as long as wide; metaventrite of male with longitudinally oval median depression; punctures fine and dense medially, sparse laterally, with fine pubescence; interspaces with long wavy lines ( Figs 2D View Fig , 3C View Fig ). Wings functional.
Penis as shown in Fig. 3D–E View Fig : in ventral view slender, with gently pointed apex; in lateral view arched evenly, with pointed apex; internal armature with symmetrical, long and forked sclerite and winding tube. Tegmen as shown in Fig. 3F View Fig : phallobase tapering sharply in basal half and near apex, with pointed apex.
Bursa copulatrix ( Fig. 3G View Fig ) without apical spines. Spermathecal duct ( Fig. 3G View Fig ) thicker in basal part, entering outer side of sperm duct lobe. Spermatheca as shown in Fig. 3G View Fig : habitus winding; body slightly swollen and fused with gland duct lobe, with large membranous patch; gland duct lobe very long, slender, winding in basal half, straight in apical half; sperm duct lobe elongate, rounded at apex; gland duct entering outer side of body of spermatheca.
Distribution. Japan: Honshu, Shikoku.
Biology. This species was captured on polypores in large numbers.
Remarks. The prior descriptions of this species were based only on female specimens ( Matthews 1899; Bowestead 2003). The morphology of the male, including its aedeagus, is herein shown for the first time.
