The family comprises 330 species, grouped into two subfamilies and 30 genera ( Courtney et al. 2017), the Edwardsininae being restricted to the southern hemisphere ( Marshall 2012). Hogue (1971) made the only contribution to knowledge of this family in Chile. Eight species into two genera, Paltostoma Schiner and Edwardsina Meigen ( Hogue 1971) , are referred to for Chile.
