Empis Linnaeus, 1758: 603 . Type species, Empis pennipes Linnaeus, 1758 (designated by Latreille, 1810).
Diagnosis. Empis is characterized by setose laterotergite, costal vein usually ending at or just beyond vein R 4+5, vein R 1 of constant thickness, male fore tarsomere 1 rarely enlarged, male cercus enlarged and functioning as a clasping organ (Bickel 1996, Sinclair and Cumming 2006), and usually radial vein branched.
