Herbs, subshrubs or small shrubs up to 3 m tall. Stem glabrescent or puberulous when young, later glabrescent. Petiole 3‒20(‒30) mm long, glabrescent; blade elliptic to narrowly elliptic, rarely obovate or oblong, the proximal ones 8‒20 (‒28) × 3‒8 cm, the distal (subtending) leaves reduced to 3‒6 × 2‒3 cm, all blades glabrous above, glabrescent to scattered puberulous especially along the veins beneath, base cuneate, usually asymmetric, apex acuminate to cuspidate, margin subentire to slightly crenate or with 2 to 4 teeth per cm especially along its distal half, hydathodes marginal to extramarginal, secondary veins 10 to 18 per side, higher order venation finely reticulate, intramarginal vein present, often continuous. Peduncle 4‒11 cm long, glabrous or rarely puberulous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium subglobose to urceolate, 5‒7 × 4‒7 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes linear-lanceolate, 11‒18 × 1‒3 mm, reflexed to patent (ascending in fruit), glabrous, basally contiguous, margin entire to slightly sinuous, with up to four inconspicuous, intramarginal teeth. Corolla green variegated with purple, glabrous; tube 1.2‒2.2 cm long × 2‒4 mm diameter at its mid-level, inflated proximally and distally; lobes oblong-triangular, falcate, apex acute to acuminate, dorsal lobes 11‒19 × 3‒4 mm, lateral lobes 6‒10 × 3‒5 mm, ventral lobe 4‒7 × 3‒5 mm. Synandrium 2.1‒3.6 cm long, exserted up to 1.6 cm; filament tube 1.8‒3.0 cm long, glabrous to sparsely puberulous; anther tube 3‒6 mm long, puberulous to glabrescent, ventral anthers barbate, with an apical tuft of white trichomes. Berries broadly oblong to obovoid, 8‒20 × 10‒12 mm, furrowed, not inflated, green when inmature, later pinkish white to purple.
Phenology: —The species sets flowers and fruits throughout the year.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera ceratocarpa occurs in Colombia and Ecuador. In Colombia, it occurs in cloud, sub-Andean to high-Andean forests, at elevations between 700 and 3000 m, in the Western and Central cordilleras, in the departments of Antioquia, Cauca, Córdoba, Huila, Nariño, Putumayo, Quindío and Valle del Cauca. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, it is highly likely that this species is not threatened.
Notes: — Burmeistera ceratocarpa is similar to B. smaragdi , B. serraniaguae and B. succulenta , from which it differs by the presence of an intramarginal vein of the leaf blade, the subtending leaves reduced to 3–6 × 2–3 cm, and the ventral anthers barbate during preanthesis (versus leaves with a discontinuous intramarginal vein, subtending leaves not reduced, and ventral anthers ebarbate all the way through in the remaining three species).
There are several duplicates of the original material of Burmeistera ceratocarpa . The author did not specify which one was used by him for the original description. Therefore, the specimen from NY [NY000467990] is here chosen as the lectotype, as it is the most complete and has flowers and fruits in formation.
Burmeistera dichlora was described by Wimmer (1931) based on the specimen Lehmann 1074, which has several at F, GH, K, and NY. The sheet chosen as the lectotype is the most complete, and has a detailed handwritten description made by the collector, and an annotation by the name´s author.
In addition, Wimmer (1931) based the description of Burmeistera pastoralis var. glabrifolia on two specimens ( Lehmann 162 and André 2758) without designating either as the holotype . The specimen Lehmann 162 deposited at K [ K000250866 ] is the most complete one; thus, it is here chosen as the lectotype .
A detailed examination of the protologues and the type specimens of Burmeistera carnosa , B. dichlora , B. pastoralis , B. pastoralis var. glabrifolia , and B. carnosa var. metastasia shows that the diagnostic traits of these five entities fall within the natural variation of B. ceratocarpa . Furthermore, the type specimens were collected in nearby localities in the departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca. Thus, the former five names are here subordinated to the synonymy of B. ceratocarpa .
Vernacular name:—“ Pata de Gallo ” (Valle del Cauca) .
