26. Burmeistera killipii Gleason, Bull. Torrey Bot. View in CoL Club 52: 99. 1925.
Type:— COLOMBIA. Cauca: La Gallera, Micay valley , 2200‒2500 m, 01 Jul 1922 (fl), E. Killip 7980 (holotype: NY! [ NY00467994 ]; isotypes: GH! [ GH00033085 ], PH! [ PH 00010888], US! [ US 00146944]). Figs. 14 View FIGURE 14 , 15F View FIGURE 15 .
Climbing herbs up to 1.2 m tall. Stem hispidous-strigose. Petiole 2–11 mm long, hispidous-strigose; blade broadly ovate, 2.0–4.6 × 1.7–3.5 cm, bullate, glabrous, usually strigose and with venation imprinted above, puberulous along venation beneath, base slightly cordate, apex obtuse or sometimes acute to acuminate, margin subentire, serrulate, with 1 or 2 marginal or extramarginal hydathodes per cm, secondary veins 4 to 6 per side, impressed above, prominent beneath, intramarginal vein lacking. Peduncle 2.3–5.0 cm long, glabrous to hispidous-strigose, ebracteolate. Hypanthium globose to campanulate, 4–7 × 4–5 mm, hispidous-strigose, usually warty. Calyx lobes narrowly ovate, 4–7 × 1.5–2.5 mm, strongly reflexed, glabrous, warty on both sides, margin subentire, apex acute to obtuse. Corolla green suffused with purple, glabrous, usually warty above and beneath; tube 1.2–1.8 cm long, 3–4 mm diameter at its mid- and distal portion, slightly inflated proximally; lobes ovate, slightly falcate, apex acuminate, dorsal lobes 11–15 × 5‒6 mm, lateral lobes 10–14 × 4–7 mm, ventral lobe 8–10 × 5–6 mm. Synandrium 4.2–5.0 cm long, exserted up to 3 cm; filament tube 3.8–4.5 cm long, glabrous, warty; anther tube 4–5 mm long, usually warty, glabrous, ventral anthers barbate during pre-anthesis, later ebarbate. Berries obovoid to oblate, 1.2–1.5 × 1.2–1.8 cm, glabrous, not inflated but spongy, white with purple calyx lobes.
Phenology: — Burmeistera killipii sets flowers and fruits from March to August.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera killipii is restricted to cloud forests of the Western Cordillera, in the the department of Cauca ( Colombia), at elevations between 1320 and 3000 m. The hummingbird Eriocnemis mirabilis has been reported as a floral visitor of this species in the specimen Olives et al. (MDMOP-10). Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], B. killipii qualifies as Critically Endangered.
Notes: — Burmeistera killipii is closely related to B. loejtnantii , from southern Colombia and Ecuador. The species differs by the hispidous-strigose indumentum of stems, petiole, peduncle, hypanthium and calyx lobes; the leaf blade bullate with margin subentire, not toothed, apex obtuse (rarely acute to acuminate), and 4 to 6 secondary veins per side; the peduncle 2.3–5.0 cm long; the calyx lobes strongly reflexed; the corolla warty above and beneath, with dorsal lobes 11–15 × 5–6 mm, lateral lobes 10–14 × 4–7 mm, and ventral lobe 8–10 × 5–6 mm; the synandrium warty, exserted up to 3 cm long; and the berries not inflated (versus the stems, peduncle, and calyx lobes glabrescent to puberulous (not strigose); hypanthium glabrous; petiole glabrescent to slightly strigose; the leaf blade not bullate, with margin subentire, toothed, apex acute to acuminate, and 5 to 8 secondary veins per side; the peduncle 1.5–1.8 cm long; the calyx lobes ascending; the corolla smooth above and beneath, with dorsal lobes 8–10 × 3–4 mm, lateral lobes 7–8 × 3–4 mm, and ventral lobe 6–7 × 2.5–3.5 mm; the synandrium smooth, exserted up to 1.4 cm long; and the berries inflated in B. loejtnantii ).
