Petiole (1.0–) 1.5–2.8 cm long, glabrous; blade heteromorphic; proximal blades elliptic to ovate, (8–) 9–14 (–17) × (2.0–) 3.5–4.5 (–6.0) cm, glabrous above, glabrescent to scarcely puberulous beneath, base cuneate, obtuse to rounded, sometimes truncate, often slightly asymmetric, apex acute to acuminate, margin from subentire to slightly crenate, lacerate or toothed, teeth c. 30 per side, obtuse to sharp and up to three different sizes, the smaller ones intermingled with the larger ones, hydathodes 10 to 15 per side, marginal to extramarginal, secondary veins 9 to 12 pairs, higher order venation conspicuous, reticulate, intramarginal vein present, discontinuous; distal (flower-subtending) leaves slightly reduced to 3–7 × 1–3 cm. Peduncle 3–6 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic, 3–4 (–5) × 3–5 (–7) mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes narrowly ovate, 2–6 × 0.5–1.5 mm, ascending to patent, glabrous, basally spaced by sinuses 1‒2 mm wide, margin with 1 or 2 marginal teeth per side, apex obtuse. Corolla uniformly green or often suffused with purple, or yellowish green with purple tints especially at its base, glabrescent to finely puberulous; tube 9–14 mm long, 2–3 mm diameter at its mid-level, inflated proximally and distally; lobes oblong, falcate, apex acute to acuminate, dorsal lobes 10–14 × 3–5 mm, lateral lobes 5–8 × 2–3 mm, ventral lobe 5–7 × 2–4 mm. Synandrium 1.3–3 cm long, exserted up to 1.2 cm; filament tube 1.0– 2.5 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 3–5 mm long, glabrous, ventral anthers in preanthesis and early anthesis with an apical tuft of white trichomes, later ebarbate. Berries subglobose, 7–11 × 8–12 mm, not inflated, glabrous, green to yellowish-green when immature, pink to fuchsia or magenta when ripe.

Phenology: — Burmeistera ibaguensis sets flowers and fruits throughout most of the year.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera ibaguensis is restricted to cloud forests of the Western and Central cordilleras of Colombia, in departments of Antioquia, Chocó, Quindío, Risaralda, Tolima, and Valle del Cauca, at elevations between 1320 and 3500 m, plus two isolated localities in the Andean Eastern slopes of the department of Caquetá. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, this species qualifies for the Near Threatened (NT) category.

Notes: — Burmeistera ibaguensis is similar to B. breviflora , B. longifolia , B. obtusifolia , and B. sylvicola , from which it differs by the stems, petiole and hypanthium glabrous, and the berries pink to fuchsia or magenta (versus stems, petiole and hypanthium puberulous or rarely glabrescent, and berries green, white or purple in the remaining species).

A detailed comparison of the protologues and type specimens of Burmeistera ibaguensis and B. lacerata shows no significant difference between them, and the type locality of the latter falls within the known distribution of B. ibaguensis ; thus, the latter is here reduced to the synonymy.
