Herbs to upright shrubs up to 5 m tall. Stem glabrous except for the young parts that are puberulous. Petiole 1.3–3 cm long, glabrous to glabrescent; blade elliptic to sometimes obovate or oblong, (6.0–)8.5–16.0(–19.0) × 2.5–7.0 cm, glabrescent above, glabrescent or puberulous especially along the veins beneath, base cuneate to rounded, often asymmetric, apex acute to acuminate, margin subentire to slightly toothed, with 1 to 4 extramarginal hydathodes per cm, these more pronounced in the distal half, secondary veins 6 to 10 per side, intramarginal vein present, discontinuous. Peduncle (5–) 6–14 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium subglobose to urceolate, 5.0–8.5 × 5–8 mm, glabrous to sparsely puberulous. Calyx lobes ovate to elliptic (length:width ratio 2:1 to 3:1), 10–18 × 4–12 mm, ascending, glabrous, basally spaced by sinuses up to 1 mm wide, margin subentire, with 3 or 4 marginal teeth per side, apex obtuse. Corolla green, occasionally suffused with purple, glabrescent; tube 1.0– 1.7 cm long, 3–5 mm in diameter at its mid-level and distal diameter, inflated proximally; lobes oblong-triangular, falcate, apex obtuse to shortly acuminate; dorsal lobes 12–14 × 2.8–3.1 mm, lateral lobes 8–12 × 5.0– 5.2 mm, ventral lobe 7–10 × 6.8–7.1 mm. Synandrium 2.1–3.0 cm long, exserted up to 1.8 cm; filament tube 1.7–2.2 cm long, puberulous or sometimes glabrescent in post-anthesis; anther tube 4.5–8.0 mm long, sparsely villous at the apex, ventral anthers barbate, with a loose tuft of white, villous trichomes at pre-anthesis, ebarbate at anthesis. Berries globose to ovoid, 1.5–3.5 × 1.5–2.5 cm, inflated, glabrescent, yellowish-green to white suffused with purple.

Phenology: — Burmeistera glabrata sets flowers and fruits throughout the year.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera glabrata occurs in the Andes of Colombia and N Ecuador (Carchi and Esmeraldas). In Colombia, the species inhabits edges of cloud forests at elevations between 1300 and 3200 in the Eastern Cordillera (departments of Boyacá, Caquetá, Cundinamarca and Meta), and the southern Andes (departments of Cauca, Huila, Nariño and Putumayo). Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, this species qualifies for the Near Threatened (NT) category.

Notes: — Burmeistera glabrata is similar to B. pomifera and B. tomentosa , from which it differs by the glabrous peduncle, the glabrescent corolla, and the synandrium exserted up to 1.8 cm (versus the glabrescent to puberulous peduncle, the hirtellous or puberulous (rarely glabrescent) corolla, and the synandrium exserted up to 1.2 and 1.5 cm in the remaining two species, respectively).

Vernacular name: —“Tapaculo” (Tipaz et al. 1039).
