15. Burmeistera cylindrocarpa Zahlbr., Repert. View in CoL View at ENA Nov. Spec. Regni Veg. 13: 533. 1915.
Type :— ECUADOR. Pichincha, “in declivibus occidentalibus Andium Quitensium prope Angui”, ca. 1800 m, 28 Nov 1880 (fl, fr), F. C. Lehmann 192 (lectotype G! [ G00236660 ], designated here; isolectotypes: BM! ([ BM000947551 ], W, not seen). Figs. 8I–L View FIGURE 8 , 9 View FIGURE 9 .
Burmeistera cylindrocarpa var. candida E.Wimm., Brittonia View in CoL 8: 109. 1955, syn. nov. Type:— COLOMBIA. Valle del Cauca: Cordillera Occidental, hoya del río “Sanjuniquin” (¿San Joaquín?), lado izquierdo, La Laguna, 1250‒1400 m, 10–20 Dec 1943 (fl), J.Cuatrecasas 15513 (holotype: MICH! [ MICH1111450 About MICH ]; isotypes: F! [ F0052922 F], NY! [ NY00038538 ], VALLE! [ VALLE000140 About VALLE ]).
Shrubs up to 1.5 m tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole 4‒15 mm long; blade oblong to ovate, 6‒14 × 2‒5 cm, glabrous above, puberulous beneath, base obtuse, apex acuminate, margin subentire to irregularly crenate especially on the distal half, with 1 to 3 hydathodes per cm, secondary veins 14 to 20 per side, higher order venation markedly reticulate, intramarginal vein present, discontinuous. Flowering region corymbiform, subtending leaves reduced, 3‒5 × 2‒3 cm. Peduncle 5‒8 cm long, glabrescent, ebracteolate. Hypanthium narrowly obconic, 10‒12 × 4‒5 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes ovate, 2‒4 × 2‒3 mm, patent to ascending, apex acute, glabrous, basally spaced by sinuses up to 2 mm wide, margin entire. Corolla green to green-yellowish, glabrous; tube 1.0‒ 1.2 cm long, 3‒4 mm diameter at its mid-level, base and throat inflated; lobes narrowly ovate, falcate, dorsal lobes 10‒14 × 4‒5 mm, lateral lobes 8‒10 × 3‒4 mm, ventral lobe 6‒7 × 3.5‒4.5 mm. Synandrium 2.1‒2.3 cm long, exserted up to 1 cm; filament tube 1.6‒1.7 cm long, glabrescent to finely puberulous; anther tube 5‒6 mm long, glabrous, ventral anthers barbate. Berries narrowly cylindric, 1.3‒1.5 × 0.4‒0.5 cm, not inflated, glabrous, white.
Phenology: —The single specimen of Burmeistera cylindrocarpa so far collected in Colombia was flowering in December.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera cylindrocarpa has been collected in Colombia only in the Western Cordillera, in the department of Valle del Cauca. It is locally rare. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, this species qualifies for the Near Threatened (NT) category.
Notes: — Burmeistera cylindrocarpa is similar to B. marginata , from which it differs by the leaf blades oblong to ovate, puberulous above, with margin subentire to irregularly toothed especially on the distal half, with 1 to 3 irregular teeth per centimeter; the peduncle 5–8 cm long, glabrescent; the calyx lobes 2–3 mm wide; and the corolla tube 1–1.2 cm long (versus leaf blades elliptic to lanceolate, glabrescent above, with margin thoroughly finely toothed, with 5 to 8 sharp teeth per centimeter, these regular in size and distribution; peduncle 8–10 cm long, glabrous; calyx lobes 0.5–1.5 mm wide; and corolla tube 0.8–1.0 cm long in B. marginata ).
There are three sheets of the type collection Lehmann 192, of which the specimen deposited at G is here designated as lectotype G [ G00236660 ], as it the most complete and has a handwritten identification made by Zahlbruckner in December 2012 .
Lammers (2007) added Burmeistera cylindrocarpa var. candida E.Wimm. to the synonymy of B. cyclostigmata . However, the type specimen of the former unequivocally exhibits a closer morphological resemblance with B. cylindrocarpa ; thus, it is here moved to its synonymy.
