40. Burmeistera pinnatisecta Luteyn, Syst. Bot. View in CoL 11: 474. 1986.
Type:— COLOMBIA. Cauca: Parque Natural Nacional Munchique , km 42‒47 NE de la Uribe, 2350‒2650 m, 23 Apr 1979 (fl, fr), J. L. Luteyn, M. Lebrón-Luteyn & G. Morales 7427 (holotype: COL! [ COL000004738 About COL ]; isotypes: COL! [ COL000004739 About COL ], NY! [ NY00468002 ]). Figs. 18I, J View FIGURE 18 , 20 View FIGURE 20 .
Scandent subshrubs up to 3 m tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole 3‒5 mm long glabrous; blade oblong to elliptic, (5–) 7–10 × 1–3 cm, glabrous above, puberulous along the midvein beneath, pinnatisect, with 11‒15 narrowly to very narrowly oblong lobes per side, each lobe 0.7–1.7 × 0.2 cm, base asymmetric, apex of each segment obtuse to rounded, margin entire. Peduncle 3.5–5.0 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium globose, 12–15 × 6.5–9.0 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 9–12 × 2–3 mm, as long as the corolla tube, patent to ascending, glabrous, basally contiguous, margin crenate with 3 to 6 teeth per side, apex acute to obtuse. Corolla green sometimes suffused with purple, glabrous; tube 9–12 mm long, 2.2–2.5 mm in diameter at its mid-level, inflated proximally and distally; lobes ovate or narrowly ovate, falcate, apex acute, dorsal lobes 16–24 × 5.8–6.0 mm, lateral lobes 10–16 × 2.8–3.0 mm, ventral lobe 5.0–8.5 × 2.8–3.0 mm. Synandrium 4.0– 4.7 cm long, exserted up to 3.5 cm; filament tube 3.5–4.0 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 5–7 mm long, glabrous, ventral anthers ebarbate. Berries globose to oblate, 1.5‒3.0 × 1.7–3.0 cm, inflated, glabrous, green when juvenile, later white suffused with purple.
Phenology: — Burmeistera pinnatisecta has been collected with flowers and fruits in March, April, and from June to August.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera pinnatisecta is restricted to cloud forests at the Munchique Natural National Park, in the department of Cauca, at elevations between 2000 and 2650 m. Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], this species qualifies as Critically Endangered.
Notes: — Burmeistera pinnatisecta is similar to B. pteridioides , endemic from the department of Boyacá, in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia. It differs by the peduncle 3.5–5.0 cm long; the flowers 3.2–4.5 cm long, including the hypanthium of 12–15 mm long; the calyx lobes 9–12 mm long, as long as the corolla tube, oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, margin with 3 to 6 teeth per side; the corolla with dorsal lobes 16–24 mm long, lateral lobes 10–16 mm long, and ventral lobe 5.0– 8.5 mm long; the filament tube 3.5–4.0 cm long, glabrous; the ventral anthers ebarbate; and the berries globose to oblate, 1.7–3.0 cm in diameter (versus the peduncle 6–7 cm long; the flowers often shorter (to 3.5 cm long, including the hypanthium of 4–5 mm long); the calyx lobes 3–5 mm long, shorter than the corolla tube, oblong, margin with 1 or 2 teeth per side; the corolla with dorsal lobes 10–12 mm long, lateral lobes 7–9 mm long, and ventral lobe 4–5 mm long; the filament tube 1.8–2.2 cm long, puberulous; the ventral anthers barbate; and the berries oblate, 1.5–1.7 cm in diameter in B. pteridioides ).
