Type:— COLOMBIA. Chocó: Carmen de Atrato , carretera a Urrao, ca. 15 km al NO de la cabecera municipal, 2500 m, 7 Nov 1985 (fl), G. Galeano et al. 724 (holotype: COL! [ COL000004736 About COL ]; isotype: COL! [ COL000004737 About COL ]). Figs. 16H, I View FIGURE 16 , 17 View FIGURE 17 .
Scandent herbs up to 1 m tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole up to 2.5 cm long, glabrous; blade multipinnatisect, 2–5 × 2–5 cm, dissected in acicular segments of third order or higher, each segment 2–5 × 0.5–1 mm, glabrous above, glabrous beneath, apex rounded, midvein conspicuous, veins of higher order unconspicuous. Peduncle 2.6–3.0 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic, 5–6 × 4–5 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes lineariform, 8–9 × 1–2 mm, patent, glabrous, basally spaced by sinuses up to 1 mm wide, margin toothed to slightly lobed, with 1 or 2 projections per side, apex rounded. Corolla green suffused with purple, glabrous; tube 1.2 cm long, 2–3 mm diameter at its mid- and distal level, inflated proximally; lobes narrowly ovate, falcate, apex acuminate, dorsal lobes 8–10 × 4.5–5.2 mm, lateral lobes 9–10 × 2.5‒3.0 mm, ventral lobe 5.0–5.5 × 3.0– 3.2 mm. Synandrium 1.7–2.2 cm long, exserted up to 7 mm; filament tube 1.4–1.8 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 3–4 mm long, glabrous except for the apically barbate ventral anthers. Fruits unknown.
Phenology: — Burmeistera multipinnatisecta has been collected with flowers in November.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera multipinnatisecta is restricted to the Colombian department of Chocó. The species is known only from the type locality in the western flank of the Western Cordillera, at an elevation of 2500 m. It occurs along steep slopes bordering forests with Ficus, Ocotea, Croton and Cedrela . Following the IUCN´s (2022) criteria [B1(EOO) and B2(AOO), conditions (a) and (b), and C2(a)(i)], this species qualifies as Critically Endangered.
Note: — Burmeistera multipinnatisecta is the only Colombian species with multipinnatisect leaf blades. Two additional species ( B. pinnatisecta and B. pteridioides ), also restricted to Colombia, have pinnatisect leaves (i.e. dissected in first or second order segments), and obconic hypanthia. In contrast, B. multipinnatisecta has leaves dissected in acicular segments of third or more order, and globose to subglobose hypanthia.
