Type Locality: Japan, Ryukyu Archipelago, Amamioshima, Komi.

Vernacular Names: Lesser Ryukyu Shrew.

Distribution: C Ryukyu Isls.

Discussion: Endemic to the C Ryukyus (Motokawa et al., 1996). Formerly a subspecies of horsfieldii (e.g., Jameson and Jones, 1977), but differs in size and karyotype (2n = 26, FN = 52; Hattori et al., 1990).
