Holotype. Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris ( MNHN) 83278, male collected by O. Navarro and given to A. Dugés.
Typelocality. Tangancicuaro, Mexico.
Distribution. Known from Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Durango, and Chihuahua, 1500 2100 m elevation.
Species group. chalybeus ( Downs 1967) .
Systematic references. Bocourt (1883), Smith (1939), Legler (1959), Downs (1967) Webb (1977), Rodriguez Torres & Vásquez Díaz (1990).
Remarks. Downs (1967: 6263) tentatively assigned two specimens from southern Sinaloa to Geophis dugesii . Webb (1977: 551) reduced G. aquilonaris to a subspecies of G. dugesii based on a collection of specimens from Durango and Sonora.
