V. Erotylini : Cytorea Laporte vs. Typocephalus “Chevrolat”
Concern discovered. Change of author attribution and date of publication changes valid name for genus.
Discussion and results. Two generic names for this taxon have been used by different authors in the past. Most recently, Alvarenga (1994: 87) used Typocephalus Dejean, 1836: 427 (type species Erotylus dimidiatus Olivier, 1792: 435 , by subsequent designation of Hope 1841: 113) as the senior synonym over Cytorea Laporte, 1840: 224 .
The validity of type designations and author attribution of “ Typocephalus ” was recently addressed by Bousquet and Bouchard (2013: 137), stating there were no available species listed in Dejean (1836) to validate Typocephalus “Chevrolat”. “The type species cited by Alvarenga (1965: 90) for Typocephalus Chevrolat , Erotylus dimidiatus Olivier, 1792 [as ‘ dimidiatus ? Olivier’] is a species inquirandum [sic] in Dejean’s catalogue and therefore is not an originally included species (ICZN 1999: Article 67.2.5). The name Typocephalus should be credited to Hope (1841: 113) who first made the name available by describing the genus and selecting Erotylus dimidiatus Olivier, 1792 , as type species.”
With the changes in attribution and valid date of publication, precedence for the name of this genus must be reversed. Thus, Cytorea Laporte, 1840 , has priority, with Typocephalus Hope, 1841 , being a junior synonym. All included species have been used previously in combination with Cytorea , which are restored.
