Though not previously reported in a survey of the nearby San Rafael Swell flora ( Harris 1983), this species was recorded for nearby Capitol Reef National Park ( Fertig 2009). This species was collected once in an old, dried wash northeast of MDRS, and photographed in the vicinity of the Burpee Dinosaur quarry at the northern end of Cow Dung Road (Fig. 40). Varieties in B. barbata are recognized by both Wipff (2005) and Welsh et al. 1993. The latter treatment asserts that all Utah plants to belong to var. barbata .
