The holotype of Thereva appendiculata was examined in the MNHN by Dr. K. C. Holston. He discussed the morphological characteristics of the holotype with J. Chainey, BMNH and it was determined to be a tabanid in the genus Scepsis Walker ( Diptera : Tabanidae ). Based on personal communications with Dr. Holston and Mr. Chainey, we place this species in the tabanid genus Scepsis . Scepsis nivalis Walker, 1850 then becomes a junior synonym of Scepsis appendiculata ( Macquart, 1840) .
