Eustigmaeus frigida (Habeeb) ( Figs. 7–9 View FIGURE 7 View FIGURE 8 View FIGURE 9 )
Ledermuelleria frigida Habeeb, 1958: 4 ; Gerson, 1972: 16 (redescription).
Material examined
Type, 1 adult female, Canada, New Brunswick, Grand Falls, in water of a small beaver pond, 20 April 1956, by H. Habeeb (420x335, 5–56).
Diagnosis
Adult female. Idiosomal shield uniformly ornamented with pits; idiosomal setae clavate and apically barbed; ratios vi: vi–vi = 2.2, ve: ve–sci = 0.7, sci: sce = 1.3, c1: c1–c1 = 0.4, e1: e1–e1 = 0.3, c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.0: 2.8: 1.9: 1.0; with 2 callosities between idiosomal shield and humeral shield. Dorsalmost setae on femora I 0.6 times as long as h1; tarsi IV each with a solenidion ().
Description
ADULT FEMALE (n = 1)
Gnathosoma . Lost in the type material.
Idiosoma. Nearly round, 403 long, 339 wide. Idiosomal shield uniformly ornamented with pits surrounded with polygonal walls. Dorsal idiosomal setae clavate and apically barbed; ratios vi: vi–vi = 2.2, ve: ve–sci = 0.7, sci: sce = 1.3, c1: c1–c1 = 0.4, e1: e1–e1 = 0.3, c1–c1: d1–d1: e1–e1: f1–f1 = 1.0: 2.8: 1.9: 1.0; eyes 14 in diameter; setal lengths: vi 47, ve 51, sci 41, sce 32, c1 34, d 1 36, d 2 37, e1 59, e 2 59, f1 63; distances: vi– vi 21, vi–ve 83, ve–sci 69, sci–sce 56, c1–c1 97, c1–d1 149, d1–d1 268, d1–d2 55, d1–e1 105, e1–e1 181, e1– e 2 55, e1–f1 52, f1–f1 95; humeral setae c 2 31, slightly shorter than c1. Suranal setae h1: h2 = 2.1, h1 54, h2 26. Endopodal shields I–II separated along midline, ventral setae 1a longer than other two pairs; endopodal shields III–IV separated along midline; 3a situated between coxae III, 1a 28, 3a 21 and 4a 22. Aggenital shield and genitoanal valves confluent, with 3 pairs of subequal setae, ag1 14, ag2 14, ag3 14; pseudanal setae ps1 thicker than other two pairs, ps 3 13, ps 2 10, ps1 15.
Legs. Length: leg I 231, leg II 181, leg III 189, leg IV 224. Dorsalmost setae on femora I (dFI) clavate and apically barbed, 33 long, 0.6 times length of h1. Dorsalmost setae on genua I (dGI) as dFI, 46 long; on genua I peglike, about 1/5 length of dGI, 9; on genua II peglike, pointed, 7. Counts of setae and solenidia on legs I–IV: coxae 2 + 1 elcp, 2, 2, 2; trochanters 1, 1, 2, 1; femora 6, 5, 3, 2; genua 3 + 1, 3 + 1, 1, 1; tibiae 5 + 1 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p, 5 + 1 p; tarsi 13 + 1, 9 + 1,,. Lengths of solenidia: I 25, II 13, III 6, IV 4.
Remarks
Gerson (1972) did an excellent redescription of all stages of this species based on materials collected in southern Quebec. The description here agrees well with Gersons redescription except that the humeral shields of Habeebs specimen are triangular instead of nearly round.
