Uracentron azureum azureum ( Linnaeus, 1758)
Type-locality. Africa, corrected by Etheridge (1968) to the vicinity of Paramaribo, Suriname, and later restricted by Hoogmoed (1973) to the confluence of Cottica River and the Perica Creek, Suriname.
Pertinent taxonomic references. Linnaeus (1758), Latreille (1801), Merrem (1820), Kaup (1826), Gray (1831, 1845), Duméril & Bibron (1837), Fitzinger (1843), Schlegel (1858), Boulenger (1885), Cunha (1961), Etheridge (1968, 1970f), Hoogmoed (1973), Greene (1977), Ávila-Pires (1995).
Distribution and habitat. Uracentron azureum azureum is endemic to eastern Amazonia, with its western distribution delimited by the Negro River, in northern Amazon, and by the lower Madeira–Tapajós interfluvium, in southern Amazon River ( Fig. 22 View FIGURE 22 ). It occurs in Brazil, French Guiana ( Etheridge 1968), and Suriname ( Hoogmoed 1973). In Brazil it is known from the states of Amapá, Pará, and Amazonas. Uracentron azureum azureum is arboreal and diurnal, inhabits primary terra firme forest, patches of forest in savanna area, mangroves, and occasionally secondary forest and perianthropic situations (if near with continuous primary forest), where it is usually found in the canopy of the highest trees (explaining why it is rarely observed), on tree trunks with smooth barks (2–12 meters high), and occasionally on fallen tree trunks, and on rock surfaces ( Beebe 1944; Cunha 1961; Hoogmoed 1973; Martins 1991; Ávila-Pires 1995; Vitt et al. 2008a).
