Plica umbra umbra ( Linnaeus, 1758)

Type-locality. “ Meridionalibus ”, restricted by Etheridge (1970a) to the vicinity of Paramaribo, Suriname, and by Hoogmoed (1973) to the confluence of the Cottica River and the Perica Creek, Suriname. Distribution and habitat. Plica umbra umbra is endemic to Amazonia, with a predominantly northeastern distribution ( Guiana region), but also present in the lower Japurá River (east side), lower Negro River (both sides), in the middle and lower Madeira/Aripuanã–Purus interfluvium, in the lower Tapajós River (east side), and between the lower Anapú and Amazon Rivers, occurring in Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, and Venezuela ( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 ). In Brazil it is known from the states of Amapá, Pará, Amazonas, and Roraima. Plica umbra umbra is arboreal and diurnal, inhabits primary and secondary terra firme and varzea forests, gallery forest, and forest patches in areas of savanna, where it is found on trunks of small to moderate-sized trees, about 2.5 meters above ground (observations in the literature varying between the ground level and up to 20 meters high), and rarely but also on fallen tree trunks, palm stems, lianas and on the ground ( Hoogmoed 1973; Hoogmoed & Ávila-Pires 1989; Gasc 1990; Martins 1991; Ávila-Pires 1995; Molina et al. 2004; Ribeiro-Júnior et al. 2006; 2008; Vitt et al. 2008a; Ávila-Pires et al. 2010; MacCulloch & Reynolds 2012).
