Type-locality. Nauta, Peru.
Pertinent taxonomic references. Cope (1876), Boulenger (1885), Vanzolini & Williams (1970), Savage & Guyer (1989), Ávila-Pires (1995), D’Angiolella et al. (2011), Nicholson et al. (2012).
Distribution and habitat. Anolis bombiceps is endemic to northwestern Amazonia, restricted to the upper Negro and Amazon river basins, and the interfluvium Coari–Tefé, occurring in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). In Brazil, it is only known from the state of Amazonas. D’Angiolella et al. (2011) reported the species in central Brazilian Amazonia (São Sebastião do Uatumã), based on MZUSP 17439, but, this is a specimen of Anolis planiceps . Anolis bombiceps is predominantly terrestrial and diurnal, inhabits primary (closed canopy) terra firme forest, where it is found on the ground or occasionally climbing the vegetation (rarely more than three meters above ground—Dixon & Soini 1975, 1986).
