Fagus mexicana Martínez, Anales Inst. Biol. Univ. Nac. México 11(1): 85. (1940). Type :— MEXICO. Hidalgo: M. Martínez 1500 (Lectotype (designated here): MEXU00009631 View Materials (image)!). Martínez (1940) did not cite a type specimen, but his collection number 1500 at MEXU is marked as the holotype. Specimens of Martínez 800 at F and US are marked as isotypes; these are not isotypes although they are original material.
